Hellcats Music: Stay Tuned for a Rockin’ Soundtrack

While Hellcats’ Executive Producer Kevin Murphy admits he is the least “cheerleader-y dude” you’ll meet, he’s a big reason why the show sounds like a rockin’ party playlist. In fact, the off-Broadway musical writer tells The Futon Critic that he likes the show’s jams so much that he wants to compile them into a soundtrack.

While you can grab tunes like the Shiny Toy Guns’s “Ghost Town” right now, the soundtrack Kevin Murphy has in mind will feature exclusive songs and covers by Aly Michalka, among others. The Hellcats theme song, which will be performed by Aly and sister AJ’s band 78violet, will debut in Episode 1.6. But music already plays a large part in the series.

“Episode 5 is about the Memphis music scene,” says Murphy. “And we get into the history of Alex Chilton, who is the lead singer of the Box Tops at age 16. And so we do a cover of the Box Tops’ ‘The Letter’ that Aly performs with Ben Norton.” A vocalist in a popular band as a teenager — sounds like Aly has a lot in common with the Memphis-born Big Star singer.

Murphy spills on a few more of the songs to be included. “Fefe Dobson recorded a version of a song called ‘Rockstar,’ which is exclusive to us,” says Murphy. The song appeared in Episode 1.1. Aly has also covered Sting’s “Brand New Day.”

“So we are building a library of material,” he continues. “Once we have enough, we’re gonna put it on iTunes and definitely do a soundtrack album.” Aly Michalka fans, keep your iPods at the ready.
