Hellcats Music: Stay Tuned for a Rockin’ Soundtrack

While Hellcats’ Executive Producer Kevin Murphy admits he is the least “cheerleader-y dude” you’ll meet, he’s a big reason why the show sounds like a rockin’ party playlist. In fact, the off-Broadway musical writer tells The Futon Critic that he likes the show’s jams so much that he wants to compile them into a soundtrack.

While you can grab tunes like the Shiny Toy Guns’s “Ghost Town” right now, the soundtrack Kevin Murphy has in mind will feature exclusive songs and covers by Aly Michalka, among others. The Hellcats theme song, which will be performed by Aly and sister AJ’s band 78violet, will debut in Episode 1.6. But music already plays a large part in the series.

“Episode 5 is about the Memphis music scene,” says Murphy. “And we get into the history of Alex Chilton, who is the lead singer of the Box Tops at age 16. And so we do a cover of the Box Tops’ ‘The Letter’ that Aly performs with Ben Norton.” A vocalist in a popular band as a teenager — sounds like Aly has a lot in common with the Memphis-born Big Star singer.

Murphy spills on a few more of the songs to be included. “Fefe Dobson recorded a version of a song called ‘Rockstar,’ which is exclusive to us,” says Murphy. The song appeared in Episode 1.1. Aly has also covered Sting’s “Brand New Day.”

“So we are building a library of material,” he continues. “Once we have enough, we’re gonna put it on iTunes and definitely do a soundtrack album.” Aly Michalka fans, keep your iPods at the ready.

The CW orders more ‘Hellcats,’ ‘One Tree Hill’ scripts

The CW is picking up six additional scripts for freshman cheerleading drama “Hellcats” and ultra-veteran “One Tree Hill.” This isn’t an order for new episodes, mind you, but a confident step in the right direction. Both shows are currently ordered for 13 episodes.

Aly Michalka Talks Love Triangles and More

When you’re one half of a Platinum-selling band (with your little sister, no less), the hilarious sidekick in the box office’s hottest new comedy (‘Easy A’), and star of a TV series that requires you to learn complex cheerleading routines every single week, there’s not very much down time.

Yet for ‘Hellcats’ star Aly Michalka, it’s all worth it. “It’s pretty crazy, but I’m hanging in there,” the star said of her hectic schedule. Michalka plays rebellious pre-law student-turned-college cheerleader Marti on The CW’s new Wednesday night drama, and spoke with TV Squad earlier this week about her character’s relationship woes, being compared to ‘Bring It On,’ and juggling her music, movie and TV careers. Read on for more.

Is your schedule really crazy with having to learn all those cheerleading routines?

Oh yeah. For sure. I mean, we all are working our butts off but having fun at the same time. That’s what it’s all about. We want to be a part of the show, we want to stay committed, and it’s been a really fantastic experience for myself and I think everybody else.

Did you have any cheerleading or gymnastics experience before you signed on for ‘Hellcats’?

Not at all, which is kind of insane. I had a background in dance, in hip hop, so that was something I was very comfortable with when it came to Marti’s character since she is the one that kind of brings that style to the squad. But it was totally new to me with the cheerleading so that was really awesome to be able to tap into.

Will Marti Hook Up with Her Professor?

So far Hellcats has featured a lot of cheerleading and not so much studying, but that will change this week when Gale Harold arrives as Marti’s law professor, Julian.

“He certainly gives her and the rest of the class the feeling that maybe he doesn’t take her so seriously,” Harold (Queer as Folk) tells TVGuide.com.

Ratings: Were Hellcats’ numbers worth cheering about?

Marti (Aly Michalka) is a pre-law student who joined the cheerleading squad to maintain her scholarship. With the Hellcats taking up most of her time, she struggles to balance class and homework with the squad.

Marti and Julian’s relationship begins as a push-and-pull, but she soon connects with him, Michalka says.

“He pushes her and pisses her off and makes her go, ‘Fine, I’m going to get my stuff together, I’m going to impress you,’” she says. Continue reading Will Marti Hook Up with Her Professor?
